DIY Ideas: How To Add Personal Touches To Your Wedding

For many couples, it is imperative that their wedding day screams them. Similarly, as a guest, you probably want to be able to look around the venue and see the couple in every aspect of the day… From colour schemes to florals and decor items.

A personalised wedding is becoming more and more popular, with the use of bespoke decor items, more DIY crafts to add the personalised touch, and things like neon signs, to highlight certain aspects of the day.

At Melt Weddings, we love to spend time in our workshop, crafting bespoke items for our couples… turning their ‘I do’ into a unique masterpiece, with thought and intention everywhere you look.
Whilst we love our DIY projects, we also appreciate that some couples either don’t have the budget or would like to take on the challenge themselves. Some couples enjoy the process of making an item together as a part of their wedding planning experience.

In today’s blog post, we’re unveiling some of our favourite DIY wonders that will make your wedding day that little bit more special. From home-designed invitations that truly detail the two of you to bespoke centrepieces and tablescapes that elevate a room, we’ve got a range of ideas to get your creative juices flowing. Get your tools out and get ready to unleash your creativity as we share 5 of our favourite DIY ideas… this is about to get a whole lot more fun.

     1. Wedding Invitations
Designing your own wedding stationery could not be easier in this day and age…

Taking your theme, colour scheme and Pinterest inspo, you’re going to want to head to a site like Canva

We’d recommend cosying up on the sofa, getting a hot drink or glass of wine, and spending an evening bouncing ideas around freely, so that you are engaging in this experience equally and completely.

Canva is free to use and is super user-friendly, so we would wholeheartedly recommend this, but you might find another site you prefer. There are aspects of Canva that require a premium subscription, but you can make something stunning without the need to pay if you don’t want to. There are also thousands of designs ready-to-use, which can be another great source of inspiration for you to base your own design off.

Take the time to translate your mood boards into a design and come back to it a few days later - you’ll notice little things you might want to tweak with fresh eyes on the screen.

Once you’re happy with your design, you can quite easily get it printed and add finishing touches to your invitations once they arrive. From punching holes and threading ribbons to gold paperclips, wax seals, and sprigs of dried florals, there are plenty of ways to elevate your stationery.

     2. Wedding Favours
If you’re looking to provide something that will please all your guests, why not package up a parcel of ‘his and hers’ favourite sweets? Or have personalised cookies with icing depicting small details of the day - like the flowers, the venue, your initials, or the date.

If you’re looking to avoid the food options (maybe you know there are a lot of allergens or dietary requirements to consider in your guestlist), an alternative could be creating a ‘floor plan wall’ with labelled potted plants, detailing each guest’s table number. This way, you have a feature floor plan and favours all in one.

     3. Centrepieces & Tablescapes
Creating a DIY centrepiece can make your day feel all the more special to you and your guests.

Even if it’s a small touch, like your table numbers being a photo of each of you when you were a certain age (e.g. ‘When we were 2’ is table 2 and so on), this will make the room feel all the more personal.

Or perhaps you have been searching every charity shop for slim bottles for single-stem florals to stand on your tables. Each bottle adding a quirk and story to the room, without the need for splashing out on high-end products.

You could also double your wedding favours as a part of your tablescape, for example, placing a book at each guests’ place setting, with their name on it. This book could be something completely random, or it could be something suited to each person. This is an affordable (again, think charity shops!!) and memorable way to recognise each of your guests personally.

     4. Signage
From welcome signs to seating charts, directional signs, and additional information, signage is such a crucial part of the overall look and feel of your wedding.

I live in fear of the day I see a stunning wedding, where every detail has been intricately planned, and they forgot to print directional signs for the toilets… I can just imagine the only paper available is bright yellow, there are only pencils available, and the surface to lean on is cobblestone.

Whilst I pray this could never be me (see my Wedding Coordinator Essentials), it’s still a real fear…

Wedding signage is just as easy to create as your invitations (and potentially easier, because styles and designs can be duplicated). The one thing to remember is to ensure you have all the signage you need to suit your day and venue.

These may include:

  • Welcome

  • Seating plan

  • Bar

  • Parking

  • Toilets

  • Guestbook/photobooth/games instructions

  • QR codes (for uploading photos to albums for example)

     5. Photobooths and Alternatives
Combining your favours with entertainment can be a cost-savvy way to kill two birds with one stone.

Features like photobooths and audio guestbooks provide not only a favour element, but are a wow feature to look at, as well as something for guests to do. Whilst you’re off with your photographer following the ceremony, your guests could be occupied with a photobooth, audio guestbook or artist, giving the day a real flow to it, and adding something a little different for your guests to experience.

As always, please be responsible when undertaking a DIY project. Whilst we want to see your personalities shine, we want everyone to remain safe and healthy too. It’s important to remember the time aspect of these projects too. Some are not overnight jobs, so make sure you give yourself enough time to enjoy the process stress-free!

Make sure you tag us in your DIY projects and crafts; we’d love to see them!
